India moving ahead, UP going backwards, says Rahul Gandhi

In a punching speech to the gathering at the Phulpur rally, sounding the poll campaign for the upcoming Assembly election in Uttar Pradesh, the Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi spoke on “Nehru’s Phulpur”, the poor of the state and what a leader should do.

“This Phulpur is Nehruji’s workplace. . . And Mr. Nehru showed Uttar Pradesh the path – showed the path of development, the path of Progress. There was a time when Uttar Pradesh showed the path to the whole of India. Today India is fast moving ahead, Uttar Pradesh is going backwards. On one hand Mr. Nehru was the MP of this place, while on the other, today, mafia and criminals are elected the MPs from here,” said the Amethi MP.

The Phulpur constituency was once an Indian National Congress bastion from where Rahul’s great grandfather and India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru used to fight elections from.

The era of the Grand Old Party in the region subsequently died after the expiring of Mr. Nehru. Since then, it has remained an “old fortress” for the Congress which wants to claim it back this time around.

Rahul Gandhi: “In 52 days, new land acquisition Bill was presented in Parliament”

In his spectacular addressing to the grand gathering at Phulpur rally starting off the campaign trail for the upcoming Uttar Pradesh Assembly election, Rahul Gandhi has depicted the plight of the farmer in India’s most populous state.

“Farmers were dying, they were being shot at. And, what was your government doing, it was just watching. No body went to Bhatta-Parsaul, not even to ask what was happening there. When I went there an officer there told me Naxalites had broken in the region that’s why they fired bullets on them,” said the AICC general secretary.

The Youth Congress leader added, “What we did? Congress party went there. We fought. In 52 days we proposed a new land acquisition Bill in the Parliament. The Bill was placed by the standing committee. Opposing groups are trying to stop it. But, they cannot stop it in the open. They can’t say it openly that they are against it.”

Amethi MP Rahul who is the face of the Congress for the upcoming UP Assembly election, has stricken the right cords by highlighting the plight of the poor peasants and seems all set to ride the ‘Elephant’.
