Congress accuses Mayawati of embezzling funds

With glaring figures of corruption in implementing welfare schemes run by the centre, the state of Uttar Pradesh has been plagued by its ruling Mayawati government. The Indian National Congress has accused Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati of embezzling rural employment and welfare scheme funds.

Party spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi said Mayawati and her administration are holding press conferences as a symbol of guilt regarding grave charges of embezzlement of funds in relation to the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).

"The Uttar Pradesh administration is also protesting too much, indeed protesting as a symbol of guilt, regarding the very grave charges of embezzlement and siphoning in relation to MGNREGA. It is no point holding press conferences to tell you that the union Minister's letter reached the press first and the chief minister later," said Singhvi.

The state government has got to answer a lot of questions. Only time will tell how well and in what way those are answered. The pitiable state of social welfare schemes is a dismay of fragile political will.
