Congress (I) has slammed Mayawati government for mismanagement and corruption in NREGA funds. Mahatama Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) scheme was launched by Congress (I)-led UPA government at the Center for providing guaranteed employment to poor people for minimum 100 days in a year in rural areas. It is a poverty alleviation scheme for rural poor and puts money directly in their pocket. Government is direct employer and payment is made directly to the poor by engaging him or her for such works as road building, school construction, lying of drainage system etc. The entire expenditure of the scheme is borne by the Central government. But even then Mayawati government in UP has not implemented this scheme properly for welfare of the poor. In some case even a single day’s employment was not made available for poor. As a result High Court has issued a notice to Mayawati government for CBI probe in misuse of NREGA funds, said Congress (I).
