Accusing UP Chief Minister Mayawati for indulging in caste based vote bank politics, Congress (I) has said she is favoring only her own Jatav community in the name of dalits. While the plight of dalits and poor in UP remains as it was before, Mayawati has helped her Jatav community to which she belongs to prosper. Government jobs have been grabbed by Jatavs; economically too Jatav’s are now more visible while plight of dalits and poor have gone from bad to worse. As a result resentment is growing among dalits and poor who feel Mayawati has cheated them, said Congress (I). Another disturbing trend the people are experiencing is that the number of cases being filed against upper castes and OBCs under the SC/ST Atrocities Act has swelled in the last five years. “As soon as a Dalit files an FIR,” explained a lawyer in Bareilly, “he gets Rs.25,000 from the government; if he wins the case, he gets another lakh”.
