Rahul Gandhi’s visit boosts Congress in HP

Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi undertook a two-day visit to Himachal Pradesh to strengthen the Congress unit in the state. The visit by the young Congress leader definitely has boosted the spirits of the Congress leaders and the workers in the state.
Rahul Gandhi interacted with the workers in NSUI and Youth Congress and also had talked to various senior Congress leaders and party workers.
“It is absolutely unacceptable that four or five leaders of the party rule the roost while the rest, including the district and block committee leaders, only discharge their responsibilities without realising their fundamental rights. You (district and block committee leaders) must assert your rights” said Rahul Gandhi regarding the Congress affairs.
Stressing the need to improve the functioning within the Congress party, the young Congress MP from Amethi said “though the works of people in the government are clearly defined, a need is being felt to define the duties within the party, especially at the level of the senior leadership, who can give their significant contribution for the betterment of the party”.
About the ticket distribution, Rahul Gandhi added “Those who put in hard work will be promoted. We need to create such a setup in which the party decides the tickets after completing all formalities six months before the election. Paratroopers will not be accommodated. The block Congress committee offices should be given more importance than the AICC during ticket distribution. Youth Congress members and block and district presidents will have more say”.
Referring the Youth Congress and NSUI, the Congress General Secretary further said “The Youth Congress and the National Students Union of India (NSUI) will take the state and the country forward. About 10-15 years later, one of you sitting here will be the chief minister of Himachal Pradesh. The chief minister of tomorrow is sitting here in this room itself”.
Indicating the factionalism in the Congress’ state unit Rahul Gandhi commented “There are two or three groups of Congress leaders in Himachal Pradesh. Ironically, more than fighting for the people's interests, they fight only for their own interests”.
Reiterating the need of unity in the party, Rahul Gandhi continued, “It is sad to note that the Congress rules the hearts of the people in this beautiful state, but it is the BJP which enjoys the privilege of sitting on the treasury benches in the Vidhan Sabha. If the top leadership doesn't close ranks, the BJP will remain well trenched in the state, which has traditionally been a Congress stronghold. Jointly work out a strategy to bring the party back to power. If you want to sit in the Opposition for the next five years, be ready for that also”.
